It’s so strange when people say you can’t ship zutara because the fire nation killed Katara’s mom. Like, Zuko and Katara literally bonded over that very thing multiple times in the show. He literally helped her go after her mom’s killer. The moment when she stopped seeing him as an impersonal enemy was when she realized he wasn’t responsible for her mom’s murder, he was a boy who had lost his own mother to the same evil. Zuko helping Katara face the man who killed her mother was the reason she forgave him and became his ally. In the comics, she went with him to find his own mother. This isn’t just a small thing, it’s a major part of their relationship, even when it’s platonic, that Katara sees Zuko as a kindred spirit who understands her pain over the loss of her mother. She’s not gonna start blaming him for her mother’s death just because the possibility of romance is on the table.

aangarchy:

Very confused the people in the fandom that say Aang is a sweet angel baby who has never done anything wrong bc did y'all actually watch the show? This kid was a total menace, lying and stealing for fun, using the avatar title to make things go his way, destroying personal property and not even being sorry for it, he was fascinated by pirates for crying out loud

“Aang wouldn’t swear” he lied to not one but two tribes about their own history to end a 100 yr old fued be serious 💀 Aang is anarchy on legs and that’s a hill i’ll die on.

Okay, but this is really important: Bruce Springsteen occupied this really weird place in music history. His songs were all from this pessimistic, nihilistic view of an America that had let him down:

image

Just like the anti-Vietnam War protest songs that we associate with the 1960s, or the early nihilism that spawned punk music in the 1970s. But he didn’t *sound* like a punk anarchist; he sounded like a country rock singer. When he released Born in the U.S.A. people completely misinterpreted (or possibly ignored) the lyrics in favor of the tone of the music.

image

Politicians used his music to promote their ‘Murica Yes! brand, and he had to literally explain that that was not what he was about. He’s over here asking when we’re going to have jobs and heathcare, not stanning the politicians who weren’t helping the people.

It was also kind of a big deal that he had an integrated band, because even as late as the 1980s music was still kind of segregated and MTV was straight up racist. They refused to play and promote black artists and then claimed that were no black artists in the first place. Michael Jackson’s record company had to threaten a boycott of their white artists to get MTV to play his Thriller video.

Plus, the first black/white interracial kiss on TV was in 1968 (OG Star Trek). Also it took us until the 70s to get sympathetic gay characters on screen, and the 90s to get gay characters to kiss onscreen. And all of those firsts were met with outrage.

So keep that in mind when you see Bruce Springsteen not just playing with an interracial band, but engaging in an interracial, gay kiss on stage repeatedly.

Passages from American Popular Music by Larry Starr and Christopher Waterman

I used to think that Bruce and Clarence kissing onstage was exuberance, showmanship, and telling racist homophobes to fuck off. Like, they picked up a certain kind of audience and went “Racist homophobes? Not in our house!” And started the kissing then but then I actually looked it up and

It was a story where… we remade the city. We remade the city, shaping it into the kind of place where our friendship and our love for one another wouldn’t have been such an exceptional thing. - Bruce Springsteen

It wasn’t about showmanship or rejecting bigots or anything it was just. Damn right that was one of the loves of his life and damn right he was going to kiss him onstage

It gets me a little that Bruce has had a divorce, that he’s been married twice, but he loved Clarence for the rest of Clarence’s life and will presumably love him the rest of his own

Clemons said in one interview. “Bruce and I looked at each other and didn’t say anything, we just knew. We knew we were the missing links in each other’s lives. He was what I’d been searching for.” In another version of the story, Clemons says “He looked at me, and I looked at him, and we fell in love.”

I’m having some emotions about it!

“He was elemental in my life,“ Springsteen adds, “and losing him was like losing the rain.”

Not just! I love you pure and deep and true but! I am going to love you like that in front of the whole damn world!

We have fewer narratives about taking risks and making statements for platonic love rather than romantic and supposedly it would be easier to downplay this onstage than romance and! They refused! They fucking refused! In front of hundreds of thousands of people, over the course of years! In the spotlight, in word and deed, I love you!

God I’m not okay about it

Now I’m mad that this is not among any of the things I was ever told about this artist.

I knew about this in general (& via all those fabulous photos), but this just adds even more beautiful context <3

Just to add to the pile: this was the cover of Springsteen’s break-through album Born to Run, in 1975:

I mean, will you LOOK at this:

This was the pic chosen for the album cover from an extensive photoshoot, too. A few others:

There’s a lot more online if you search. They’re all pretty amazing. But the photographer is right, the one chosen for the album cover just pops.

i consider seeing avatar 2 in theatres a selfish act

you can get your 3ish hours of entertainment for you and only you, or you can help us all make it flop together, and give the whole world infinite enjoyment as the fate of the franchise is called into question and we can all laugh communally for years and years and years

Also indigenous groups are asking people to boycott the film.

IF YOU ARE UNMARRIED, DON’T HAVE KIDS, AND HATE YOUR PARENTS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HAVE A FUCKING WILL

this has been a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood probate lawyer

Again:

1. The law doesn’t care how long your parents and family have been out of your life

2. The law doesn’t care about your long term friends or “found family”

If you don’t have legal documents that say otherwise, your biological family calls all the shots.

This goes especially for LGBTQ+. Please do not get deadnamed in your obituary.

How to make a will.

How to make a living will (Advance Healthcare Directive) so you don’t get fucked over by biological family if you end up in a situation where you cannot make your own healthcare choices.

If youre trans, this video is a good ref to start with and she provides links and organizations that can help

^I’ve been loving this channel lately, and this is a particularly good video about how to have your wishes respected after you die if you have family who may NOT respect you/your identity.

Such a good idea to make a plan. And also watch Caitlin’s channel (and read her books).

THIS IS NOT JUST WILLS

Also check up on your Power of Attorney. If you’re in a coma/unresponsive state they divert to legal next of kin.

EVERYONE needs to have a plan. While it is especially important for people who are estranged from their legal next of kin please please please have these conversations with your loved ones. These are so important and the last thing your grieving family needs is to worry they aren’t respecting your wishes (burial or cremation? Do you want to donate your organs? Who do you want to give your belongings to? These are not intuitive concepts and your family will stress of getting it wrong) simply because they didn’t know them.

Also Caitlin Doughty is fucking boss. Just sayn.

The Advance Healthcare Directive is SUPER important. Please make one and keep it updated (they expire every few years). If you are old, are disabled, have any mental health issues, engage in any form of self-harm, or have any history of suicidal ideation or suicide attempts, lots of healthcare folks are all too happy to declare you unfit to make decisions for yourself.

Remember that even if you trust them, the people who love you can make really extreme and harmful decisions when they’re scared they could lose you.

Not just Power of Attorney, also name a Healthcare proxy! I don’t know how it works in other countries, but in the US the PoA takes care of your financial wishes (they can legally access bank accounts, etc in your name) and Healthcare proxies make your healthcare decisions if medical professionals deem you unable to do so for yourself (coma, dementia, etc). You can have one person be both, but make sure to name who you want legally AND if you can, write up a written document of your wishes. This can be everything from life support to what name to use in your obit to if you want to be cremated/buried/etc. If your wishes are legally written down and signed, it’s a lot harder for any estranged family member to dispute anything. Verbal agreements are good, but written ones are undeniable.
